Neighborhood Profile: Canal Road

In our neighborhood profile series, we take you inside the most popular places to live in Dehradun and give you all the information you need to make the right decision about where to live in the city If you are a foreigner looking for a place to live in Dehradun, you’ve come to the right place!

Canal Road runs parallel to - and within walking distance of - Rajpur road in the north end of the city.  This  road runs along the site of one of Dehradun’s famous historical canals (now invisible - covered over by the road) and along the Rispana Rao river.  Like much of Dehradun, this area is growing rapidly with new housing and businesses springing up regularly.  Here’s what you need to know about living on Canal Road:

Housing

Canal Road has numerous neighborhoods and housing complexes along it, providing a range of housing options, from free-standing family bungalows to high rise apartments.

Food

Along Canal road you will find a variety of small roadside restaurants and food stands filling the air with the delicious smells of street food in the evenings, and the best burgers in Dehradun (in my opinion) can be had at Monkey Fist.

For food shopping, you will find a bunch of grocery stores that have popped up in the past few years, such as Bachat Super Store, Urban Buy, and Daily Needs Plus. Fruit and vegetable stands can be found all along the road as well.

Wellness

For the workout warrior, a handful of gyms can be seen from Canal road (Body Planet, Body Fitness, Koles Gym).  For healthcare needs there are small pharmacies and specialty clinics to provide non-emergency and outpatient medical care (Samvedna Health Care, Ishu Medical Store, Smriti Eye Care, Beyond Smiles Dental).

Entertainment

Canal Road is within easy reach of the entertainment options on Rajpur Road - Malls such as Pacific Mall and Silver City offer movie theaters, shopping and dining, and arcade.

Transportation & traffic

Canal road used to be a quiet orchard-lined lane off Rajpur road, and while it is still not as busy as that main thoroughfare, the traffic has become busier in the last few years. Public transportation is not readily available on this road. If you’re looking for buses, vikrams and autos, it’s best to walk up to Rajpur road.

Noise

As on any city road in India, traffic noise is an issue for properties adjoining the main road. However, most of the residential properties are found back from the road, in the small neighborhoods and lanes.
